Cheap Eats

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

In college, there was a point when I was so poor I lived off of canned tuna, bread and lettuce that was on sale. For about a month, i was able to live off of about $9 of food. With the second great depression going on, I thought it might be a good thing to post some interesting ways to stave off hunger on a budget.

One of my favorite blogs: Cheap Eats. This nifty little blog has tips, recipes, and techniques to eat on a budget. A very limited budget.

Bucket o’ Food. Costco has a vegan-friendly emergency food kit with a shelf life of 20 years, and 275 servings of food. If you eat three meals a day, that comes out to roughly 90 days of food. You could survive the entire year on about $340, less than a dollar a day. I’m going to send Sally Struthers one of these.

Dirty Hands

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

I just came back from watching Dirty Hands: The Life and Crimes of David Choe at HIFF, and I have to admit to being deeply interested and enthralled by this piece.  I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed anything so completely raw before, and I’m thankful that Harry Kim and David Choe were brave enough to make this happen after 7+ years of work.  For those of you in Hawaii, try to catch it again on Wed, Oct 15 at 7pm.

A true American

A true American

I listen to NPR way too much, and with the impending super-armegeddon-of-craptacular-doom on hand, I feel like I’ve been spiraling into a whirlpool of financial confusion.  How did this happen?  What should we support?  Am I going to lose my house?  What is the best way to preserve meat salvaged from the body of my dog/cat/snake?

Free Rice!

If you’re bored at work, and tired of playing those endless games of online sudoku, maybe you should try freerice.com. Why bother playing this game instead of perfecting your 1337 skillz at 3D pong? For every answer you get right, Freerice gives away 20 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger, also you could probably use the vocabulary help. As Mitch Hedberg might say, “Rice is a great food when I feel like eating a thousand of something.”

Hypermiling

aero civic

You see that ridiculous looking car at the top of this article? That comical abomination gets 95 miles per a gallon. It’s not even a modded hybrid. It’s an old civic. It is all at once ludicrous and inspiring, and an interesting example of hypermiling.

Little Oven

Monday, October 13th, 2008

When I was eleven years old, I was convinced that I was in love. Yes, I may have had brief crushes in the past, but this time, it was for real. I’ll keep the identity of my 5th grade crush anonymous (as all 5th grade crushes should be), but she was devastating. She was smart, sophisticated, beautiful, and still a sweet person that charmed adults and children alike. My first slow dance was with her, nervous, and exciting all at once, and I assure you, it was completely adorable. We could have been one of those kleenex commercials with Billie Holiday playing in the background, complete with awkward smiles and fleeting eye contact. The feeling of a first crush is exactly what the flavors of Little Oven offer.
